That's why you don't go as drastic as a year...3 years is more than enough time for any image to find at least one sale. Most people are not self-editing, just search for a past year such as 2005 and you will find calendars, New Years images, etc. that are also still on the site.
At the rate that new images added to Dreamstime is growing, The number of images to wade through in a search is becoming prohibitive...customers only have limited attention spans, they will not look through every image. I don't think weeding out 3+ year-old unsold images is bad for business...it just makes sense.
